2. Accuracy: When the AI mentions you, is it accurate? Does it describe your offering correctly, or has it aggregated stale information from old websites or competitor posts?

3. Attribution: Does the model cite its source? If so, where does the backlink go? A mention with no source wastes visibility.

4. Competitive Positioning: How do you rank next to competitors? Are you mentioned first, last, or not at all?

Each AI model answers differently. ChatGPT draws from training data frozen months ago. Perplexity searches the live web. Gemini factors in Google properties. Claude has its own training cutoff. None of them is “the internet”—they’re each a different lens on your market.

How to Run Your First Prompt Test

Start with these five prompts. Run them in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. Document the results in a simple spreadsheet.

Prompt 1: Brand Awareness Test

What companies do answer engine optimization work? List the main players in this space.

This tests top-of-mind awareness. Are you in the first mention? Do you appear at all?

Prompt 2: Service Definition Test

How would you explain AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) to a marketing director who's never heard of it?

This tests whether the model understands your category correctly. Bad answers here signal that your content hasn’t been indexed or aggregated well.

Prompt 3: Recommendation Test

I need help with answer engine optimization. Who should I hire?

This is the commercial intent test. Does the model recommend you? Your competitors? Generic agencies?

Prompt 4: Expertise Test

Who are the thought leaders in answer engine optimization?

This tests reputation and visibility. Are you listed as an expert? What context is provided?

Prompt 5: Comparison Test

How does [Competitor A] compare to [Your Company] for AEO services?

This tests direct competitive positioning. If the model can’t compare you, it doesn’t know you well enough.

Run these five prompts in all four AI models. Screenshot the results. Note the exact wording of each response.

Document Your Baseline

Create a spreadsheet with these columns:

This becomes your baseline. You’ll run it again in 30 days, 60 days, and quarterly to track progress.

The Visibility Patterns You’ll See

Most companies find one of these patterns:

Pattern 1: No Mentions

Your brand doesn’t appear in any of the AI responses. This usually means:

Fix: Build authority content and earn mentions from external sources.

Pattern 2: Scattered Mentions

You appear in one or two models but not others. ChatGPT might mention you (training data aggregated months ago), but Perplexity doesn’t (live web search favors current, active sites).

Fix: Update your website, republish evergreen content, and build fresh backlinks.

Pattern 3: Inaccurate Mentions

The AI mentions you, but the description is outdated or wrong. You’re described as a freelancer when you’re now an agency. You’re labeled as a developer tool when you’re really a marketing platform.

Fix: Update your website copy, publish corrective content, reach out to sites that mention you and ask for updates.

Pattern 4: Buried Mentions

You’re mentioned but fourth or fifth in the list. Competitors get the featured spot.

Fix: Outrank them in traditional search (Google SEO), publish original research that AI models want to cite, secure top-tier backlinks.

Why Attribution Matters

When Perplexity or Claude cites a source, that’s a backlink. It’s traffic. It’s SEO value.

Look at the sources the models cite. Are they pointing to your website, or to competitor sites that mention you? If an AI model pulls information about you from a competitor’s page instead of your own, that competitor gets the traffic, not you.

This is why “being mentioned online” isn’t enough. You need to be mentioned on your own pages so the sources point home.

Test this explicitly. When an AI mentions your service, hover over the citation and note where it links. If it links to your website, good. If it links to a review site, a directory, or a competitor’s comparison page, that’s a missed opportunity.

Prompt Testing for Competitive Intelligence

Your prompt tests aren’t just about you. They’re intel on competitors.

When you ask “How does [Competitor] compare to [You]?”, you’re testing how well the AI knows your competitors. If it can’t describe them accurately, neither can it describe you.

Use your tests to build a competitive landscape map:

This tells you what information is “winning” in the AI space. If a competitor is frequently mentioned but you’re not, their content or backlinks are stronger.

You now have something to compete against.

Scaling: Build a Monthly Audit

After your first test, make it systematic.

Run the same five prompts in all four AI models on the first Monday of each month. Same time, same prompts, documented the same way.

Track:

Over six months, you’ll see patterns. You’ll know which initiatives moved the needle. You’ll catch when competitors surge.

You’ll also notice seasonal shifts. After you publish a major article, does it take two weeks to appear in Claude but three weeks in Gemini? You’ll know that.

Action: What to Do With Your Results

Prompt testing is an audit, not a strategy. Here’s what to do after you have results:

If you’re not mentioned: Build content that answers the questions the AI models are being asked. Don’t just write blog posts—write content that deserves to be extracted and cited by answer engines.

If you’re mentioned inaccurately: Publish a corrected version on your own site and reach out to sites mentioning you to request updates.

If sources don’t point to you: Ensure your own website is the authoritative source. Add structured data (schema markup) so AI models know you’re the original.

If you’re behind competitors: Analyze what they’re doing. Are they publishing more? Getting more backlinks? Using different language? Match or exceed their output.

The test itself changes nothing. The work you do afterward changes everything.

Why Prompt Testing Wins

Google search is mature. Everyone’s optimizing for it. The algorithm is stable.

Answer engines are nascent. They’re still figuring out what to trust, how to rank, what to extract. This is your window.

Brands that build authority now—through original content, earned mentions, and strategic backlinks—will own answer engine real estate when these platforms mature.

Brands that ignore answer engines will wake up in 2027 to find their competitors dominating AI model outputs. They’ll have to rebuild credibility from scratch.
