You know your content performs in Google. But where do you stand in the AI search layer that’s becoming impossible to ignore?
ChatGPT now has 200+ million weekly users. Claude conversations hit millions monthly. Perplexity has billions in backing. Google AI Overviews appear in search results for millions of queries. The answer engine layer is real—and most companies have no idea whether their content is being cited.
This audit tells you exactly where you are. It shows the gaps. And it gives you the foundation for a real AEO strategy.
Why Audit AI Visibility Now
Three reasons matter:
First, AI answer engines bypass traditional search traffic. Someone asks ChatGPT about your industry and gets an answer with no link to your site. That’s potential customer consideration gone. You can’t fix what you don’t measure.
Second, the algorithmic signals are different. Google cares about click-through rates and time-on-page. AI systems care about comprehensiveness, source authority, and how often your domain appears in training data. A site that ranks #5 on Google might appear in zero AI answers—or vice versa.
Third, the landscape moves fast. New models release every few months. Retraining happens. Your August visibility might shift by December. Regular audits catch when your positioning changes.
The Audit Process: Five Platforms, Systematic Testing
Platform 1: ChatGPT
ChatGPT reaches the widest audience. It’s the baseline.
Open ChatGPT 4 (or your highest-tier model) and search for your primary keyword or key question. Don’t search “my brand”—search what your customer actually asks.
Example: If you sell AEO consulting, don’t search “AEO consulting.” Search “how do I optimize for AI answer engines” or “what are the best answer engine optimization tools.”
Record exactly:
- Does your content appear in the response?
- How deep? (First mention? Last mention? Buried in a source list?)
- Is it directly quoted or paraphrased?
- How many competing sources appear above it?
Take a screenshot. Copy the full response. Save it to a spreadsheet row labeled “ChatGPT—[Date]—[Keyword].”
Platform 2: Claude
Claude’s training data cuts off at a different date and weights sources differently. Your visibility here might diverge from ChatGPT.
Use Claude (3.5 Sonnet or later) with the same keyword. Ask the same question you asked ChatGPT—exact wording matters, since phrasing affects which sources an AI weights.
Example prompt: “What are the best answer engine optimization tools on the market today?”
Record the same data: appearance, depth, quoting style, position relative to competitors. If Claude cites you but ChatGPT doesn’t (or vice versa), note it. That gap tells you something about your positioning or domain authority in different training datasets.
Platform 3: Perplexity
Perplexity uses internet-wide retrieval, not just training data. It pulls live results. This tests whether your current web presence is comprehensive enough.
Ask the same keyword-focused question. Note whether Perplexity pulls from your site directly (it often does), how it frames your content, and whether it attributes it clearly with a link.
Perplexity is more transparent than ChatGPT about sources—you’ll see cited links. That’s useful data: if Perplexity links to you for a query but ChatGPT doesn’t cite you, your content has SEO strength but lacks training-data representation.
Platform 4: Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews appear in search results for specific queries. Test your keyword on Google and see if an Overview appears.
If it does, record:
- Does your content get cited?
- How many sources appear?
- Is your site #1 in organic results below the Overview? (#1? #3? #10?)
This data shows whether Google’s AI extraction algorithm weights your content, separate from traditional ranking.
Platform 5: Gemini
Google’s conversational AI also deserves testing. Gemini is available in Google’s search labs and as a standalone interface.
Same questions. Same recording method. Gemini’s behavior often differs from ChatGPT—it may weight Google-owned properties differently, or rely more on very recent indexing.
Scoring Your Visibility: Build a Simple Rubric
Create a spreadsheet with five columns per platform: keyword, appears, depth, attribution style, position relative to competitors.
Use this scoring:
Appearance:
- Not mentioned: 0 points
- Paraphrased or indirectly referenced: 1 point
- Directly quoted or clearly attributed: 2 points
Depth (position among sources):
- Fifth mention or later: 1 point
- Second to fourth mention: 2 points
- First mention: 3 points
Positioning (relative to direct competitors):
- Below two or more competitors: 1 point
- Below one competitor: 2 points
- Top position or no competitor sources: 3 points
Total possible per platform: 8 points. Calculate your score as a percentage: (your points / 8) × 100.
If you score 60+ across all five platforms for a keyword, you have strong visibility. 40-60 means moderate presence with gaps. Below 40 signals that your content isn’t reaching AI systems—you have work to do.
What the Results Mean
High scores (70+): Your content is well-established in both training data and current web results. AI systems know about you. Focus here is maintenance—keep the content fresh, expand depth, build more internal linking to reinforce authority.
Medium scores (40-69): You’re visible but not dominant. Your content exists in some datasets but not others, or it’s buried below competitors. This is the most actionable range. Pick your top two gaps and address them.
Low scores (below 40): Your content doesn’t yet reach AI systems at meaningful scale. Either your domain lacks authority, your content is too shallow, it’s too new (under 6-12 months), or you haven’t published on this topic at all.
Identifying Your Gaps
Here’s where audit becomes strategy.
Gap Type 1: Not appearing anywhere
If you don’t appear in any AI response for a keyword you target, the content probably doesn’t exist or isn’t findable.
Action: Create a comprehensive, long-form guide (3,000+ words) on that exact topic. Include real data, cited sources, and expert perspective. Publish it, ensure it’s indexed, and build one inbound link from an established domain.
Gap Type 2: Appearing in some platforms, not others
You’re in Claude but not ChatGPT. In Perplexity but not Google Overviews. This signals dataset recency or training-data gaps.
Action: Update the content with fresher data. Add more citations from academic sources or well-known publications. Improve the page authority by building backlinks. Wait 4-6 weeks and re-test.
Gap Type 3: Appearing but buried
You’re the fourth or fifth source cited. Your content exists but isn’t weighted as heavily as competitors.
Action: Make the content more comprehensive. Add a detailed case study. Include data no one else has cited. Expand the introduction so it directly answers the query in the first two paragraphs—AI systems weight early, clear answers.
Gap Type 4: Appearing but poorly attributed
Perplexity or ChatGPT paraphrase your content without clear attribution or backlink. Traffic doesn’t follow.
Action: Make your original research or unique data so specific that it can’t be paraphrased without attribution. Use exact figures, specific case studies, original research. AI systems tend to credit unique claims more reliably.

Add a row for each keyword you target. Update the spreadsheet after each test (quarterly is the practical cadence).
Over time, you’ll see which platforms weight your content differently and which keywords need the most help.
When to Re-Audit
Full re-audit: Quarterly (every 3 months). Model updates happen. New training data gets incorporated. You need to see movement.
Quick spot-check: Monthly for your top 5 keywords. Search each one, note if you still appear. Takes 10 minutes.
After publishing: One week after any major content launch, test the specific keywords that piece targets. Did it move the needle immediately, or will it take weeks?
When competitors shift: If you notice a competitor publishing heavily on your target keywords, re-audit within two weeks. New content can shift your position fast.
Making This Data Actionable
